Dragons were bio-engineered from the indigenous fire-lizards of Pern. In the 1st Pass, the people from Planet Earth were oblivious to the coming threat of the Red Star. It was the Fire-lizards who warned them. The Fire-lizards urged them to get into their homes and tried to char the deadly thread. It was then that they came up with an idea. Make big ones!
Admiral Paul Benden approached the Eridani Geneticists, Kitti Ping and her daughter Wind, Blossom to create bigger dragons to protect Pern. Thus, the dragons and their riders came to be.
Gold
Gold are queen dragons. Other colors instinctively protect golds. These golds rule and govern the other dragons. They are very broody and very temperamental but they are the smart ones.
Gold dragons are the only egg-laying colors. A gold clutches about two to three times a year, bearing average of 20 to 40 eggs. They clutch more when the Red Star nears.
There is only one or none gold egg in a clutch. Queens are very rare and very treasured.
Gold riders are weyrwomen. The one who rides the Senior Queen is the Weyrwoman of the Weyr. She has the responsibilities and privileges that goes with being leader to the whole Weyr with her Weyrleader.
For Fire-lizards, golds are the smartest and most reliable. Look at Menolly's Beauty or Piemur's Farli.
Bronze
Bronze dragons are the second largest to golds. They are strongest and have stamina to withstand throughout a threadfall. They are one of the two who can fly(mate) a gold.
Bronze riders can attain a Wingleader position. Since their Bronze can out fly any other colors, they can fly a gold and become Weyrleader.
For Fire-lizards, Bronze can be smart too. They can search for things you want them to look for and with the right initiative, they can deliver messages. Examples: Master Robinton's Zair, Menolly's Rocky and Diver.
Rocky is an odd fire-lizard. He grew a little attached to Piemur making people think he is Piemur's fire-lizard. Though it might be because Piemur feeds him regularly.
Note: Weyrleader and Weyrwomen may not always be weyrmates. They each may have their choice weyrmates like T'gellan and Mirim.
Brown
Browns are the third largest dragons and third most reliable fire-lizards.
Browns have stamina but not as much as a bronze. Some can outlast a threadfall but not all.
They can try to out fly a bronze for a gold but it is not common. The largest brown so far is Canth who intended to fly gold Wirenth before her tragedy.
Brown riders can attain a position called Wingsecond. They head the Wing after the Wingleader. Trivia: Some brown riders are homosexual.
Green
Green dragons are female but cannot lay eggs. The chewing of firestone renders them infertile.
Greens are very valuable to a wing. They are very agile, though cannot last the whole of threadfall.
Most green dragons impresses girls. In the 6th Pass, plague leveled the population so females were needed to populate the planet. Greens were given to choose bisexual males instead. They riders of the green mate with the riders of whoever flies their dragon.
By the 9th Pass, greens are going out of the hatching ground to search for a female rider. Tai and Mirim are green riders who were not in the hatching ground when their greens came to them.
Green fire-lizards are different from their dragon cousins. They can give birth but unfortunately, their clutch is all greens too and most of the eggs are addled. Green lizards are not very good mothers. They tend to lay in the beach too close to the water.
Blue
Blue dragons are the smallest males. They are roughly the size of a green. These blues only mate with green because they are as small. The number of blues are not as much as the population of greens, though.
Blue dragons pick their candidate like the greens, bisexual males or females. Though there was never a mention in any book of a female blue rider. They can pick straight males too.

Ruth is the only white to be recorded. This white dragon is unusual because he is the only one that there is. He is small and has different other shades of the other colors against his white hide. Ruth was thought to die in a turn or two because he looked like a premature dragon. He was able to prosper and live very long.
Though he was called an overgrown fire-lizard, he was in fact a dragon. He does have fire-lizard capability which was to retain memories. (dragons cannot retain memories) Because of his size, fire-lizards are attracted to him. They talk to him and give him a lot of pictures. That led to the discovery of Landing.
Ruth is the only dragon to know when he is.
He is also the friendliest dragon!
